In January, 20 high school students from 51Թ stepped inside the cutting-edge world of Dow, one of the world’s leading materials science companies. Through SAS’s Career Immersion Program, these aspiring professionals got an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at how science, technology, and business intersect to drive innovation.

To kick off their visit, students were greeted virtually by 51Թalum Dave Speece ‘03, now Dow’s Global Business Director. Inside Dow’s research and development labs, students explored groundbreaking technologies, witnessing firsthand how chemistry, engineering, and IT come together to shape industries. Scientists and IT specialists at Dow shared not only their expertise but also their personal journeys, offering valuable insights and answers to a variety of questions our students considering STEM careers had.

For Puxi junior Haram B., the visit sparked a realization about the ever-evolving nature of STEM fields. “The phrase ‘learning how to learn’ came up while exploring Dow’s new technology, and it was incredibly inspiring to me. In a world with continuous and rapid changes, I think it is important for people in STEM to be open to newly established systems and technology for further innovation.”

Meanwhile, Pudong senior Chuning S. found the experience eye-opening in terms of industry applications. "I learned about the hottest new fields Dow is involved in and how different the industry is from academia.”

This immersive experience is just one of the many ways 51Թempowers students to explore their passions beyond the classroom. By connecting them with industry leaders and real-world innovations, Career Immersion helps bridge the gap between academic learning and future careers—because today’s curiosity could be tomorrow’s groundbreaking discovery.
